Do you know...
Because of global warming, a lot inhabitants of island in low
altitudes,in Pacific, had to leave their home because the increasing
of sea level.
That the glaciers`melting has serious consequences for many species
such as polar bears. A new scientific study shows for the first
time in significant numbers, these mammals are dying drowned,
because they need swim long distances to “land”.
After the passage of Hurricane
Katrina in USA, on Juny 31st, 2005, a search of Massachussets
Institute Technology (MIT), has reported the scientific consensus
that global warming makes hurricane more powerful and destructives.
Waves of heat are increasilying
powerful in the world, according with scientists, they will be
even more intense. In summer of 2003, Europe experienced a stronger
wave of heat and had 35 thousands people died.
If we don`t face the challenge
of global warming, about 40% of the world population, could face
serious problems because the lack of drinking water. Currently
over 1 million people don`t have access to this resource.
Several countries in Africa
and Middle East, besides China, India and Mexico had suffered
the consequences water scarcity? About 97.5% of water, distributed
in seas and oceans, available on the planet is salty. Only 2.5%
is fresh water and is available in glaciers and aquifers (underground
reservoir) and 0.007% of planet has fresh water distributed on
the surface of rivers and lakes, etc.
That the lack of sanitation
(understand as dirty water) is responsible for 1,7 million deaths
per year, it is like 10 Jumbo air plane fell everyday and 90%
of the “passengers” were children.
Almost 70% of fresh water
cosumed is used in agriculture and one sixth of population, about
1 billion people, had suffered with threat of drought and desertification.
The embezzlement of rivers, as solution to combat the drought
brings serious damages for the people and the whole environment.
In United States, about
10 billions of daipers are used every year. It estimated that
almost 4% of north-american solid waste are diapers and manage
an annual cost of 100 million dollars.
One cow produces about
378 litters of methane gas per day, and this gas contributes in
12% of global warming. Adding with landfills, animal waste, sewage
water can reach 27.6% of methane dumped in the atmosphere.
More than 240 million
tires, only in US, are dumped every year and only 7% of all is
recycled, others 11% are incinerated and 5% are exported. The
rest 77% are discarded in landfills. The estimate is more than
2 billions of tires had been accumulated all over the country.
Other countries like Brazil, China, India also suffer this problem.
According with the Inventory
of Emissions of Greenhouse Gases in São Paulo city (2003/2005),
organized in accordance by the rules of Intergovernamental Panel
on Climate Change (IPCC), NU, the biggest city in Latin America,
issues about 15.738.241 tons of CO2 (carbon dioxide) per year
and the other source of carbon dioxide is the production of solid
waste.
Pollution and lack of
sanitation, deforestation, fire and disorderly and predatory advancement
of agricultural crops and livestock, desertification, scarcity
of water and global warming, are just some indicatives that Earth
needs our help.
